If there’s one thing that’s certain it’s uncertainty… After a period of optimism for major cultural events this summer 2021, the situation has once again worsened over the past few weeks.
Putting on WE LOVE GREEN was a mammoth task this year. However, the conditions have changed from a creative, health, administrative and financial point of view, making it too difficult for the festival to go ahead smoothly.
The risk of staging a massively downgraded edition of a festival of this size has become too large. And so, we were left with little choice but to make the painful decision to cancel, keeping our ambitious festival mission intact for 2022. We did everything we could, but unfortunately there won’t be WE LOVE GREEN 2021.
Day after day, the risk of cancellation became increasingly ominous. The difficulties in booking international and French artists multiplied due to travel restrictions, vaccination requirements and increasing infection rates. Despite patiently (re)building our line-up, little by little we ran a real risk of losing the true essence of WE LOVE GREEN.
On top of this, there’s the growing threat of restrictions tightening, with major cultural events such as ours being first in the firing line. In times like these, independent international festivals are fragile without any guarantees or insurances for protection.
Obviously we’re deeply saddened by this decision and it wasn’t an easy one to make, as it carries serious consequences for our festival and the teams who have worked on this edition for the past two years now… Without forgetting the serious consequences on a whole value chain of workers and professionals who are essential for bringing such an event to life.
Our motivation and determination are shaken, but we remain strong. Despite everything, WE LOVE GREEN will come to life in various other formats: we’ve teamed up with various associations who share our vision, as well as our favourite artists, to present WONDERLAND PARIS, a 6,000m 2 open-air pop-up venue, open from Wednesday to Sunday until 3 October.
In fact, we’re sending a part of our line-up across the country to give them the exposure they deserve: there’s CLIMAX festival from the DARWIN team in Bordeaux at the end of August; AFRICA2020 & NYEGE NYEGE will take place in the middle of Bois de Vincennes woods in Paris; and we’ll be taking over the brand new LUMA cultural venue in Arles… all that before our big WE LOVE GREEN 2022 come back!
And finally, we want to say a huge thank you to all our teams, providers, partners, institutions, festival-goers and to everyone who has continued to support us during these wonderfully chaotic times! We’ll be ready and waiting for you in better times!
