Sustainable development has been at the heart of WE LOVE GREEN since its creation. In fact, it is the very purpose of our association, which was set up in 2011: “To develop and promote eco-citizenship and raise awareness of sustainable development, by designing, producing and organising artistic events in the field of live performance”.

The aim of WE LOVE GREEN is to raise public awareness of the issues surrounding sustainable development, in an original context that will arouse people’s curiosity.

See Our politics of sustainable development

At the same time, WE LOVE GREEN is a laboratory for experimenting with and developing eco-responsible solutions, innovations and working methods for the events and live performance sectors.

This work is collective:

  • it is deployed in all our processes: charters, general purchasing conditions, contracts, etc.
  • it engages all our stakeholders: the public, volunteers, service providers, partners, artists, restaurants and speakers
  • it involves all the festival’s teams and departments: management, programming, communications, partnerships, administration, production and, of course, sustainable development.

It is part of a continuous improvement process. Every year, we carry out a number of audits, measurements and assessments that provide us with data and the keys to year-on-year improvement:

  • ISO 20121 audit, the international standard for “responsible management systems applied to the event industry”: WE LOVE GREEN was certified ISO 20121 in June 2023.
  • Assessments by British NGO A Greener Future
  • Carbon footprint with the support of the British NGO A Greener Future

OUR COMMITMENTS

Mobility

The transportation of festival goers and of merchandise represent the 2 primary sources of emissions in the festival’s total carbon footprint (in 2024 it was 51% and 13% of emissions, respectively)
Among our action to reduce this footprint : 0 car parking (except for people with reduced mobility, free and guarded bike parking, a giant Vélib terminal, local service providers, transport sharing (ride-shares, car-pooling), cargo bike logistics, etc.
To find out more about : see our Carbon Balance 2023

Circularity

To limit production and waste, we reduce our use of resources (no single-use plastic, returnable water bottles, reusable tableware), we reuse existing materials (circular scenography, donations to charities or recycling centers), and we recycle unavoidable waste (15 separate streams sent for recycling).
In 2024, 78% of the 130 tons of waste (including 100 tons of litter and urine) produced at the festival will have been recycled.

Food

Catering is a fully-fledged program of the festival.
- A 100% vegetarian festival open to all since 2023, which has reduced the carbon footprint of the food sector at the festival by seven times.
- A selection of 50 artisan restaurateurs with a strict charter: seasonal, local products, at least 50% sustainable or organic farming
- Verification of charter compliance by Ecotable, through an audit of all the restaurant invoices.
Sustainable beverage offering, 95% of drinks are produced in France and 80% within 200km.

Energy

Each year, WE LOVE GREEN works like a laboratory.
- Complementing the electricity grid (75% of the festival’s energy mix with 100% renewable contract), test innovations each year : solar, green hydrogen, second-generation bio-fuel generators made from green waste battery packs.
- Monitoring : consumption readings to optimize installations in following years.
- Consumption Reduction : power limits set into artist contracts (maximum number of kWh supplied for both lighting and video), billing restaurants, and partners based on their consumption.

Water

In order to limit the use of water, dry toilets and seated or standing urinals are available everywhere. With 290,000 urinals used over the 3 days, nearly 1,450,000 liters of drinking water were saved compared to the use of a conventional system.
It is required for our service providers to use all Ecocert-certified cleaning products at a minimum.
